Window Installation Cost (2026): Per-Window Pricing for Contractors
Windows are priced per window, not per square foot. The price depends on type, brand, size, and whether it is new construction or replacement. Get the per-window pricing wrong and a 12-window job loses $2,000-5,000 in margin.
Here are the 2026 window installation rates that win bids and protect profit.
How Windows Are Priced
Per window installed (material + labor):
- Vinyl new construction (single hung): $400-800 per window
- Vinyl new construction (double hung): $500-900 per window
- Vinyl replacement (insert/retrofit): $500-1,000 per window
- Wood replacement (Andersen, Pella): $700-1,500 per window
- Premium fiberglass (Pella Impervia, Marvin): $900-2,000 per window
- Custom or specialty (bay, bow, picture): $1,500-5,000 per window
- Egress install (cut + frame foundation): +$1,000-2,500 per window above install cost
The "premium" tier varies a lot. A standard double-hung Andersen 400 series runs $700-1,200. A Pella Reserve in custom size runs $1,500-3,000. Always quote with brand and series specified.

Markup and Margin
Standard markup on residential window installation: 25-40%. Brands like Andersen and Pella offer dealer pricing that supports a 30-40% markup while staying below MSRP.
Solo installers run 25-30%. Companies with showrooms and admin overhead need 35-45%.
Common Mistakes That Kill Margin
1. Forgetting interior trim. New windows in a remodel often require new interior trim if the existing was painted or damaged in removal. $40-150 per window in trim cost easily missed.
2. Underbidding stucco or brick patch. Window replacement on stucco or brick homes requires patching the exterior. Skip this and you eat $200-500 per window in surprise costs.
3. Skipping permit fees. Window replacement permits are required in most jurisdictions. Skip and you risk having to pay 2x the permit fee plus delay penalty.
4. Not specifying brand and series. "Vinyl double-hung windows" is vague. The buyer expects Andersen 400. The supplier delivers builder-grade. You eat the difference. Always specify brand, series, and finish.
5. Free upgrade to grids or simulated divided lights. Grid patterns add $40-100 per window. Simulated divided lights add $80-200. Customer asks "can we do colonial grids?" Issue a change order, do not absorb.
