Countertop Installation Cost (2026): Quartz, Granite, Marble Per Square Foot
Countertops are the second-biggest line in a kitchen remodel after cabinets. Pricing varies 5x between materials, fabricators, and edge profiles. A 50 sq ft kitchen can cost $1,500 in laminate or $8,000 in premium quartz.
Here are the 2026 countertop rates per square foot installed.
How Countertops Are Priced
Countertops are priced per square foot of surface area, including:
- Material (slab cost prorated to your job)
- Fabrication (cuts, sink hole, cooktop hole, edge profile)
- Templating (measure visit, $200-500 included)
- Installation (delivery + install)
- Standard edge profile (eased or rounded)
Sinks, faucets, sealants, and demo of existing are usually separate line items.
Per square foot installed (2026):
- Laminate (Wilsonart, Formica): $25-50/sq ft installed
- Solid surface (Corian, Avonite): $50-90/sq ft
- Granite (level 1): $45-70/sq ft
- Granite (level 2-3 premium): $70-120/sq ft
- Quartz (mid-range, Caesarstone, Cambria): $55-100/sq ft
- Quartz (premium, Calacatta patterns): $90-160/sq ft
- Marble (Carrara, Calacatta): $60-150/sq ft
- Quartzite (natural, sealed): $80-180/sq ft
- Butcher block (maple, walnut): $40-100/sq ft
- Concrete (custom): $80-150/sq ft
- Soapstone: $80-180/sq ft
These rates assume eased or 1/4 round edge. Premium edges add $5-25/sq ft.

- Install day: 2-4 hours for typical kitchen
- Plumbing reconnect: $150-400 (often plumber subcontract)
Demo of existing:
- Laminate demo: $4-8/sq ft

- Disposal: $100-300
Sub-base:

Site Conditions That Change Pricing
- L-shaped or U-shaped layouts: built into the per-sq-ft pricing
- Island countertop with overhang (10+ inches): corbels or steel brackets, +$200-500 per island
- Waterfall edge (slab continues down side of island): +$300-1,200 per side
- Eased to mitered upgrade: pay attention, this is +$40-100/LF and often a costly change order
- Existing tile backsplash needs removal: +$5-12/LF for demo
- Heavy slab requiring 4+ installers or crane: +$300-800
- Custom slab matching for vein continuity: +$300-1,500 selection fee
- Honed or leathered finish (vs polished): +$5-15/sq ft
- Sealed countertop (granite, marble, quartzite): included in install, but warn client about resealing every 2-5 years
Markup and Margin
Standard markup on countertops: 25-50%. Stone fabricators sell to contractors at trade pricing 20-30% below retail. Pass through some discount and keep healthy margin.
Solo contractors run 25-30%. Companies that include countertops in remodels typically run 35-45%.
Common Mistakes That Kill Margin
1. Free upgrade to mitered edges. Customer sees a mitered edge in a magazine. Asks "can we have it like this?" Mitered edges are 5-10x the labor of eased edges. Issue a change order, do not absorb.
2. Underbidding sink cutouts. Each cutout is $150-350. A kitchen with a double sink, cooktop, and prep sink = 3 cutouts = $450-1,050 not in your basic per-sq-ft estimate.
3. Skipping the demo line. Removing existing granite or quartz tops is heavy work. 4 installers, careful handling, dump fees. $400-1,000 for a typical kitchen demo. Do not absorb.
4. Not specifying slab grade. "Granite countertops" is too vague. Buyer expects level 2 (premium). Fabricator quotes level 1. You eat the difference. Always quote with specific brand, color, and grade.
5. Free overhangs. Island overhangs over 10 inches need structural support (corbels, steel brackets, or a longer cabinet). $200-500 in materials and labor. Always size up to the overhang the customer wants.
